Retrospective: 2024

🌱 As 2024 enters the rear-view mirror and we look forward to 2025, this is usually an opportune time to reflect and plan. Those who know me personally are aware that 2024 was a challenging year with personal loss and challenges in the extended family, as well as some health issues, but it was also one with opportunity and challenges (some I chose for myself). 💼 I’m extremely grateful for the support I’ve received after starting PiForge. It’s been an amazing start for a new company, and while the last few months have been challenging with deadlines and extra hours, I look forward to what that means for the future. ...

My two favorite AI tools (that I don't see enough people talking about)

Over a year ago a wrote a post about how I felt that, even though ChatGPT was making me more productive, I also felt it was making me lazier and dumber. Since then, I’ve been a lot more intentional about how I use AI tools, in particular generative AI tools and coding assistants. It should be a multiplier, not a replacement or crutch, which is something I see juniors and non-developers struggle with the most, but clearly we can all fall prey too. ...

You snooze you lose 😴

Just a quick general update, I’m still working on bugs, I’ve got some ironed out, but found a few more small ones, should have a new build out by end of week. The plan after the bugfixes are to tackle the font issues that were raised, as well as resizing the UI to make free up more space for visuals. For the latter I’ll probably look at moving more information to tooltips instead of a big info window. ...

Why You're NOT an Engineer (also Why It [Probably] Doesn't Matter)

Trigger warning: this is a bit of a rant. Also, it contains opinions. Specifically mine. If you are allergic to other peoples opinions, or likely to experience anger or hatefulness when hearing others opinions, this post is probably not for you. Also, if you actually are an Engineer, have a cookie. Intro I spend a large amount of time on interviews. Or I did, up until mid 2020, but whatever. Sure, it’s not as much as large corporations fielding thousands of applicants, but I’d wager more than the average startup. I’ve conducted a couple hundred interviews myself, and I’ve been interviewed a couple ten times. ...

Time doesn't necessarily happen in chronological order.

And neither does development on this game apparently 😅 This is just a quick general update to say that I’m finally resuming development on this game. I still have a lot of bugs and improvements to figure out before I start adding more content, but I’m finally in a position where I can spend a day or two a week on this, as opposed to an hour here and an hour there. ...

Be water, my friend (my tao of software development)

Intro I don’t know why this has been on my mind the last few weeks, but guess that means I need to write something down… I love Bruce Lee. I don’t generally think of myself of someone who has “heroes”, but if there is one person outside my father who has greatly inspired me and changed how I think about life, it would be Bruce Lee. At first, as a little kid with silly hopes and crazy dreams, it was just all the cool fighting scenes in his movies that made want to be like him. ...

Not dead yet...💀🎲

Hey everyone. I’ve been wanting to do an update, but was hoping to do so once I had more to share. I’ve been working on the game occasionally over the last few weeks, but I’ve run into a ton of issues, mostly my own fault, but not all of them. I’ve started addressing some of the issues that people raised, and this was going well until I tried to make a new build. I mentioned in one the last posts just before I released that upgrading to URP in Unity meant my lighting was broken, and builds took longer because I had to manually bake lighting. ...

Thank you 🫶 (also, what's next)

Hey everyone 👋 I just wanted to post a quick thank you to everyone who has tried out my game. I especially appreciated anyone who has given me feedback on it. Obviously being an alpha I know there is a lot of work left, and it really helps when I hear what people think need to be addressed first. I had some time off after releasing and had a chance to rest and recover, and would like to get back into things this week. I won’t be working at the same pace I was before, but I do have some clear goals that I would like to set. ...

We did it!

It’s been a long few months, so I’ll keep this short. Windows, MacOS and Android builds are working, Linux still has issues, so I’ll work on that. But… LOL, not really, this is just the beginning! The game has most of the mechanics there; equippable skills, turn based combat, ultimate skills, skill unlocks, dice roll mechanics. But it needs more, and it needs balancing. More enemies, more skills, more bigger dice. ...

What I learned from making my first game (and how my approach changed for the second one)

TL;DR That’s pretty much it. Entire post summed up right there 👆 Introduction Early in 2023 I took on a challenge. I’d been going on about making my own game for ages, and my wife finally called me out on it; stop talking, start doing. A buddy of mine had been doing the same thing about an app idea he had, and so our wives decided to lock us in a room for a day and force us to work on these ideas. ...
